Breast Self Exam

  • Health & Wellness

Self-love is being tossed around nowadays like it’s the cure-all for everything that ails us, and I think this phrase earned its rightful place in our consciousness and no matter how many times we encounter it, it should be treated with respect. And its preciousness extends to what we need to check on our own. Breast self-examination is an important tool for early detection of breast cancer. It’s also the simplest.

So, go ahead and do it. Right about now. Here’s how.

Stand in front of a mirror

Look at your breasts directly and in the mirror. Check out changes in skin texture, such as dimpling, puckering, and indentations.

Raise your arms

Now, raise your arms above your head and look for the same changes. While you’re in front of the mirror, gently squeeze your nipple to check for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples. This fluid can be a watery, milky, yellow fluid or even bloody.

Lie Down

Now feel your breasts while lying down. Using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together, moving them in a circular motion.

Remember that while the breast self-exam can help you be familiar with the normal look and feel of your breast, not all findings should be the cause of worry and concern. Most lumps that women find in their breasts aren’t cancerous, so finding something suspicious in your breast shouldn’t make you anxious. Always consult your doctor regarding any lumps or findings that you may have.

Remember, the person who saves your life may be you.
