Tips for Single Moms

  • Women Specific

Being a mom, single or otherwise, is one of the most difficult and rewarding challenges a woman can ever face. Raising another person is no easy task and that’s something you should be proud of!

In an ideal scenario, there are two people sharing the responsibility of raising a child but taking on this responsibility alone makes it even harder.

We’re here to help you with tips on how to be a successful single mom from other single moms!

1.  Find your community and ask for help

It takes a village to raise a kid and there’s no shame in asking for help. As the sole person responsible for your child’s upbringing, it can feel lonely and isolating at times.

As a single mom, you’ve probably developed a strong sense of independence and self-reliance due to the many situations you’ve had to face on your own, but this does not mean you don’t need support from others. Get help from your family members and make them a part of your child’s life as well. Catch up with friends and enjoy some downtime where you can spend a moment where you don’t have to worry about being a mom for a while. You deserve a break, too!

Social media can also be a great tool in getting some much-needed support. Join mom groups and forums to chat with other moms and see how they’re doing. You’ll be surprised by the friendships you can form here!

2.  Be flexible

It’s important to plan and set goals, both for yourself and your child’s future, but remember to also stay flexible as things don’t always go according to plan. An important parenting tip to remember for single moms is to always have a backup plan for when plan A doesn’t go right. For example, your kid gets sick and their pediatrician is out of town, have a list of backup doctors handy so you don’t stress out about where you can bring them.

3.  Learn to say no

This tip for single moms can be quite tough as they have to be both the good cop and the bad cop at the same time but setting boundaries for your child is important if you want to raise responsible adults. Don’t feel guilty if you have to say no to your child, especially if what they want is outside of your limitations in time, energy, or resources. Doing more things or giving more things does not make you a better mother. It’s the quality of your actions that matters.

Being a single mom is no easy job. Just because it isn’t easy doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the journey or that the journey can’t become a less difficult one for you. While yes, you are a single mom, that does not mean you have to go through this all alone. Sheroes is here to be with you and help give you all the support you need, whatever that may be!
