They say that ‘tis the season to be jolly because it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But it might be more appropriate to say that we better watch out and we better not cry – because this year happens to be 2020, and all we want for Christmas is a cure for COVID-19.

Thanks to the ongoing pandemic, bad news has been pouring in for months, but maybe the good news is that we’ll all be home for Christmas. If that still sounds less than ideal, then perhaps the global health crisis is cranking up our old holiday blues to another level.(1) With the restrictions of the new normal going strong this yuletide season, it’s definitely not looking a lot like Christmas for many of us.

It’s one thing to follow the right safety protocols for our own protection, but Sheroes know that we also have to take care of our mental health. After all, the occasion is supposed to be merry and bright, not to mention sacred for many. But if those star and snowflake ornaments on your Christmas tree are starting to look more like the coronavirus than anything else, why not use some good old Christmas songs to get you in a festive mood?

Inspired by these famous songs, here a few tips to help you deal with the stressful cocktail of COVID-19 and the holidays!

“Last Christmas” by Wham!

If you felt drawn to this song, you’re probably remembering all the fun you had with your friends and family last year. It’s great to reminisce about last Christmas, but make your trip down memory lane a happy one! Instead of wallowing about what might have been this year, try to practice gratitude by appreciating the fact that you’re alive and well enough to celebrate the season.

“Let it Snow” by Dean Martin

Like the weather in the lyrics, everything might seem “frightful” because of the pandemic. But as the song goes, just “let it snow” and realize that there other “delightful” things that we can enjoy. For example, you might even end up reconnecting with friends and family that you haven’t seen in years, thanks to online reunions this month!

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey

The holidays can come with a lot of pressure to be happy and festive, but like this song says, we don’t need a lot for Christmas. It’s not about the decorations, the expenses, or the gifts – it’s all about love. Since we’ve all been having a hard time, look out for your loved ones, and ask them how you can help. Even without the big and lavish parties that we used to have, we can make the occasion all about connecting with others in a safe and socially distanced way.

“Christmas In Our Hearts” by Jose Mari Chan

You’ve probably been hearing this song since the ‘ber months started, but now is a good time to listen to the lyrics. In order to feel the spirit of Christmas in our hearts, why not share your blessings with the less fortunate? In the quest for gratitude, good health, and happiness, the act of giving has been proven very effective.(2) ‘Tis definitely the season to be kind, generous, and truly happy, Sheroes!
