How Moms Can Own a Successful Business

When COVID-19 happened, many moms started their own online businesses. Some moms have done this as a side hustle while others have had to resort to their own resourcefulness as many companies, both here and abroad, have closed leaving many without jobs.

Being a mom, as we all know it, is both a difficult and rewarding responsibility. This already full-time job is demanding and hard to manage on its own. So, juggling another career, like owning your own business, seems nearly impossible.

But it can be done! Here are pro tips for women entrepreneurs on how they can juggle being a mom and a business owner at the same time.

Set business hours

Being your own boss and working from home can make it easy for you to work all hours of the day (and night). Setting business hours is important in creating limits and boundaries between your work and home life -- something that seems almost non-existent these days during the pandemic.

Work on a desktop

The next business tip we have for entrepreneurs is about creating your own office. If you can, work on a desktop instead of a laptop or tablet. This minimizes the chance for you to bring your device with you from room to room and instead, restricts you to just one “office” in your home. This not only helps you have your own space, but it also helps you focus on the tasks you have at hand instead of juggling too many things at the same time.

Family comes first

One of the biggest problems faced by women entrepreneurs involves the difficult decision of putting their business or their family first. We say it’s always important to put your family before anything else. Like if there’s an emergency involving your kids, know that your business can wait. But even if it’s not an emergency and your children just need a little more attention from their mom that day, don’t feel bad about switching off your computer and giving them the care they need.  One thing’s for sure, they’re only young once and we don’t want to have any regrets when they’re older and have their own lives.

Involve your kids

Take your kids along this journey with you! Depending on your child/ren’s age/s, you can find age-appropriate tasks that not only help you get the work done but can also serve as bonding experiences for you. Ask them for help when it comes to packing and shipping orders. Seek their opinion for photos you’re about to post on social media. If you’re comfortable about it, you can use your children as models for your products or services. Knowing they’ve helped you with something important will also boost their self-esteem and aid in their development.

Breathe

You’re a mom, not a superhuman (although sometimes it’s kind of the same thing). While it may feel like you have a million things to do, you physically and literally cannot do them all. And that’s okay! There’s nothing to feel guilty about. Ask for help when you need it and remember to breathe.
